My sister who has survived cancer and completed an Ironman Triathlon raises money for cancer awareness on July 4th, her birthday, by eating as many hotdogs as she can for people to pledge per hog dog eaten.
Though I am tempted to join her as others do, I realize there are good reasons to not even if I have multiple stereotypes of someone who would be expected to do well.
I realized I would be better off doing what I can do well to determine how much per hot dog. Last year, I stated I will donate 27 cents per player I was ahead at the world championship which I qualified last year on July 4 for the final as I was ahead of 41 of the other 71 players in the MA60 division.
This year, I decided to have my donation based on the July 3rd Dellwood flex start featuring 6 holes each from the red, white, and blue tees. I made it 13 cents per player in one of the ten divisions I could play who doesn't beat me score.
Though the official starting time was 8AM, I was there at 715 and surprised people were already starting which was a good thing since the more who play, the more I could beat and pledge. Eventually, I ended up in a group with three fellow 50+ players.
Though I started with two birdies, I knew most of the balance of the round would be a drive to 45 to 120 feet followed by an approach and a short par putt. My eighth hole (#5 blue to the B pin) involved a difficult drive with water left and I thought I threw it well but the wind died and since it was soft, it drifted into the weeks along the stream. Unfortunately, it went past them and was wet leaving me with an impossible shot to get close to save a bogey. I tried it and after it hit a tree on the other side and rolled away from the basket, the best I could do was throw to 40 feet followed by a missed uphill putt for a 6.
On my 16th (#11 red to A) an uphill reachable par 3, I tried throwing a disc too hard and literally threw it into the ground sixty feet in front of me which it landed on edge literally ending up under a 6 foot high pine leading me to another bogey finishing a disappointing +2 which was one more shot than someone with my rating would be expected to shoot.
Due to storms that started around noon, what I was hoping would be 250-275 total players ended up being 218 so here is the breakdown of the other 217:
7 were in a division restricted to a female player
6 were in a division restricted by age I did not qualify to play
39 were in a division restricted by a maximum player rating which is below mine.
That leaves 165 players (div:players not me/DNF/score equal or worse)
